A PRIVATE members’ club for boat owners and yachtsmen could soon be converted into self-catering holiday accommodation, despite an objection from Conwy Town Council.
Peter Rowe, of PLP Estates Ltd, has submitted a planning application to Conwy County Council’s planning committee, seeking to convert North Wales Cruising Club into a six-bed single holiday let.
The building on Lower High Street includes live-in steward accommodation and has been used by the club for 95 years.
The applicant is proposing to renovate the building, which currently includes a bar, utility room, and toilet area on the ground floor; a meeting room, small kitchen, and toilet on the first floor; and a two-bedroom self-contained apartment on the second floor.
If the planning application gets the go-ahead, the new building will feature a lounge and kitchen-dining area on the ground floor; three bedrooms and a bathroom on the first and second floors; and the basement will be used as a storage area.

The applicant also wants to remove some internal walls and erect partition walls.
But Conwy Town Council has written to Conwy County Council’s planning department objecting to the plans, which lie within the town walls, a World Heritage Site and a conservation area.
“Councillors are concerned about the proliferation of holiday accommodation within Conwy town and the potential loss of a commercial business and the jobs associated with it,” a town council statement read.

According to the planning application, the club is outside the designated shopping zone.
In a planning statement, the applicant has written: “The property has previously been used as a private members’ club for The North Wales Cruising Club, which was founded in 1928 for yachtsmen and boat owners.
“The use extends over the first two floors along with a live-in steward accommodation on the upper floor.
“The property has recently been vacated and put on the market for sale.
“The applicant is therefore seeking to purchase the property and to change the use into a single short-stay let accommodation.”
The planning application will be debated by Conwy County Council’s planning committee.
