A SPECIAL taster session for blind and visually impaired golfers will take place this Saturday (March 11).

The special taster session, at Abergele Golf Club, will start at 1.30pm.

The event is being supported by the Royal National Institute of Blind People (RNIB).

Abergele Golf Club is the first golf club in North Wales to host such a session.

Iain Runcie, organiser of the Blind Golf Taster Session alongside Jeff Morris and Dave Reeney, said: “ I lost my sight six years ago but I didn’t let this hold me back from playing golf. I enjoy playing the sport more now than I did when I could see.

“The hardest thing is to take the first step in a new environment. However, once the nerves are out of the way, I guarantee you will realise how much fun golf can be."

Megan Harris, marketing manager at the club, said: "The taster session is free to attend and open to both beginners and those that are experienced golfers. No matter your ability, the taster session is open to those that are losing/have lost their sight."

The afternoon will be lead by PGA Fellow Professional Stuart Runcie and assistant PGA Professional Adam Runcie.

Megan added: "The Blind and Visually Impaired Taster Session has been designed to give an insight into golf, covering everything from putting and chipping, to long game. It is a great opportunity to learn more about the sport and explore the possibilities of a new hobby for those that are visually impaired.

"We know that the hardest thing to do is take the first step in a new environment. However, we hope that once the nerves are out of the way and people take the first step, they will realise how much fun it is and how easy it can be when you lose your sight to play golf."

A spokesperson from the RNIB added: “Blind and partially sighted people are twice as likely to be inactive than people without sight loss and the RNIB would like to change that. Opportunities like this are a great way to try a new sport or get back into something you have dropped because of your eye condition.
