A GIRL from Glan Conwy walked up Snowdon last weekend for charity in memory of her late grandfather.

Amelia Robert, 11, took on the trek in freezing conditions on February 4 with her brother, Ben, 26, in aid of the charity Dementia UK.

The cause is particularly close to Amelia’s heart after the devastating loss of her grandfather, Ernest Prendergast, who died in September 2020 aged 90 after suffering from vascular dementia.

Ernest was a chiropodist, who had a surgery on Wynnstay Road in Colwyn Bay, before later offering a mobile service.

Amelia said: “I decided to do this walk because of my grandad’s death. I wanted to do this walk just for him.

“I really enjoyed Snowdon, it was fun; I would do it again. Even though it was for my grandad, we helped people near the top when one of their friends was injured - but it was extremely cold!

“I really appreciate the encouragement from the people me and my older brother helped, it was nice of them to do that!”

Ben added: "Climbing mountains is a part of weekly life for me.

“I am no stranger to Snowdon, I have seen it in all of her majesty, on this occasion, Snowdon showed one of its darker sides.

“An 11-year-old girl endured her first ever mountain with snow, rain, gusts of up to 50mph and a bitterly cold chill effect of -5C to achieve a goal of reaching the summit to raise money for a cause she believes in.

“And she did so without complaining once!

“Regardless of her being my sister, there is absolutely no bias when I say that I am incredibly proud of her. This will have been a difficult undertaking for most inexperienced individuals."

In November, Amelia’s mother and Ernest’s stepdaughter, Donna, told the Pioneer: “She loved her grandad so much. It really hit her hard when he died; she collapsed to the floor when we told her.

“She was really close to him.”
