A FLAMING torch light parade was held in the streets of Conwy for the 12th year running last week.

The parade, which had been organised by Conwy’s Chamber of Trade, saw more than 100 people battle the freezing conditions to light torches for the procession through the town’s streets.

The event started at 4pm on Saturday, 10 December, where the Clerical Error Morris Dancers performed on the High Street followed by a performance in Lancaster Square at 4.35pm.

At 4.15pm the Conwy Jester and the Conwy Wizard performed as a double act, involving some sword fighting.

Crowds lined the streets as the snow fell, cheering on the performers and welcoming those who came from across North Wales to join in the celebration.

This was supposed to be followed by a fire performance by Inferno at 4.50pm in Lancaster Square, but they were forced to pull out due to the adverse weather conditions.

The parade started at 5.45pm at Castle Square and travelled down Castle Street, up the High Street before finishing in Lancaster Square.

Choirs that were due to perform were also forced to pull out due to the weather, with health and safety a cause for concern.

Russell Erwood, Chairman of Conwy Chamber of Trade, said: “The parade is organised to encourage visitors to come to a free event in Conwy and see what the town has to offer.

“Conwy is a wonderful town for Christmas shopping as it has so many individually owned shops selling unusual items.

Drummers from Batala Bangor also went along as the event celebrated its 12th year, having grown from just a dozen torches in 2010 to more than 100 torches this year.

Also in attendance were the mayors of both Conwy and Beaumaris in Anglesey.

The event was praised by members of the public, with one person saying: “A great evening! Great atmosphere!” while another said: “A great event and super turn out considering the weather earlier.”

One said they had a “brilliant time”, adding the “Morris dancers were fantastic.”

Conwy will next host a Christmas Eve celebration, where carol singing, fireworks and an appearance from Father Christmas are among the highlights.
