A WOMAN has pleaded for help dealing with rubbish being left outside her home - which she claims is attracting rats and flies.

Amelia Azevedo, 59, lives in a ground-floor flat with her roommate on Oxford Road, Llandudno, and claims other people are leaving bins against her back yard wall.

She added that this been an issue for a number of years now, which has got no better despite the various arrivals and departures of people living in the neighbourhood.

Amelia said: “The problem is getting worse and worse.

"I’m forced to live in these conditions, with rats and flies everywhere, the horrible smell, and sometimes rubbish bins flip over my backyard.”

Amelia’s efforts to remedy the problem via contacting Conwy County Borough Council (CCBC) have, she said, so far proved fruitless.

Not only are bins left by her property, she added, but this, in turn, has led to rats and flies also being found on the premises.

She added: “So far, I haven't any help from the council.

“It’s been going on for years, and now it’s getting worse. The council is aware of it, because even some of the neighbours have reported it, but the council come here and put more bins.

“That wasn’t a solution – there are more bins and more rubbish now.

“It’s a very awkward situation because the access to the bins is through Garage Street, so the tenants should put their bins on the main street on the collection date, but they don’t.

“The council said they can’t force the tenants (to do so), but I’m forced to live with this situation.

“I want them to put the bins somewhere else. They’re full of rats and flies; in the summer, you can imagine how smelly it is.

“I’ve sent the council pictures, but there’s been nothing (done) so far. It’s nothing to do with our bins on Oxford Road; we’re tidy and clean.

"Even when the bins are so full, the bags fall into my back yard. Something has to be done; I can’t live like this.”

Cllrs Tom Montgomery and Angie O’Grady, both of the Tudno Ward in which Amelia is based, urged a resolution to the problem.

Cllr Montgomery encouraged her to contacted him, while Cllr O’Grady said she has already reported the matter to the council.

Cllr Montgomery said: “As Ms Azevedo's local councillor, I am here to help her with any issues.

“I would ask her to get in touch with me as soon as possible so that I can work with her and Conwy's Regulatory and Environment, Roads and Facilities departments to see if we can resolve this situation as soon as possible.”

Cllr O’Grady added: “I did report this issue on behalf of the resident. As I did not hear anything further, I was under the impression this matter had been resolved.

“As this matter is still outstanding, I have raised it again with the service concerned, and I will contact the relevant cabinet member to see what can be done.”

A Conwy Council spokesperson added: “We are aware of problems at this location and our waste team has visited the site.”
