A DRUNKEN Colwyn Bay learner driver had been “showing off” to a terrified teen passenger by allegedly driving a BMW car at 100mph - before he crashed into shops, a court heard on Friday (August 12).

Jeevan Selvamani, 24, of Walshaw Avenue, was told by Judge Timothy Petts at Caernarfon Crown Court: “It’s only through good fortune neither he nor you were seriously injured.”

Selvamani admitted driving dangerously in Abergele Road, Colwyn Bay, early on December 27.

He also pleaded guilty to drink-driving, failing to stop after the crash and being uninsured.

Judge Petts said the defendant had a “bright future, all being well” and imposed a 12-month suspended jail term.

Selvamani has to carry out 250 hours of unpaid work and was banned for three years and until he passes an extended test.

The judge said he was voluntarily paying compensation.

Prosecutor Elen Owen said two shopkeepers had estimated repairs would cost up to £15,000.

The car passenger was a stranger who’d been offered a lift.

Rosemary Proctor, defending, said Selvamani had since addressed his mental health issues and did yoga.

He had considered deeply the consequences of his actions and was sorry.
