THERE was a great deal of excitement at Rydal Penrhos School in Colwyn Bay last week, with representatives from the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) and the BBC visiting to film for an episode of “Saving Lives at Sea”.

The programme will feature Gareth Robinson, who is network services manager at Rydal Penrhos, and recently concluded his training to be a volunteer rescuer at the RNLI’s base in Llandudno.

As part of the filming, Holiday Club children and Prep School pupils were invited to attend a presentation on water safety in the Memorial Hall on August 5.

More than 30 children took advantage of this opportunity, with Mr Robinson and John Roberts providing an interactive talk to those in attendance.

This featured important elements such as how to spot dangers at sea, what to do in the event of an emergency, practising calling 999 and learning how to float effectively.

The presentation also went through the RNLI’s proud history and importance, which was interesting and informative in equal measure, captivating the children.

They also got the chance to dress up as lifeguards and RNLI crew members.

Mr Robinson also demonstrated a mock emergency bleep run, which involves getting to the station and getting dressed for a rescue in the quickest time possible.

Children got the chance to meet the BBC production crew and were given safety leaflets, flags, stickers and badges as a way of thanking them for their attentiveness.

Current parent and RNLI staff member Gary Pittaway was also in attendance, with deputy principal and Head of Prep, Lucy Davies, also coming in to lend her support.

The “Saving Lives at Sea” programme featuring Rydal Penrhos is set to be out later this year.
