More than 24,000 payments have been made by Conwy County Council to those awaiting their council tax rebates.  

But residents who don’t pay by Direct Debit will have to wait until next month for their £150. 

The Welsh Government’s Cost of Living Support Scheme is designed to help residents with the increasing cost of living.

Consequently, one-off £150 payments are being made through local councils to those with properties in council tax bands A-D. 

But many residents across Conwy and North Wales are complaining they are yet to receive a payment. 

Conwy says it started the process this week.

A council spokeswoman commented: “Conwy County Council started making the Welsh Government’s £150 Cost of Living Support Scheme payments to residents this week. 

“Over 24,000 payments have been processed this week and eligible residents who pay Council Tax by Direct Debit will start receiving the payment next week. 

“For those who don’t pay council tax via Direct Debit, the council anticipates providing a method for them to receive their payment in June. 

“The payment is being made to residents with properties in council tax bands A-D and also to those who were receiving support through the council tax Reduction Scheme on 15 February 2022, regardless of the valuation band of the property.” 

Cllr Mike Priestley is the cabinet member for finance and said residents who don’t pay their council tax by Direct Debit would soon receive a payment. 

“Not everybody prefers to pay by Direct Debit, and it’s their personal choice if they want to pay at the Post Office. They obviously support local services, which they are entitled to do,” he said.  

“It’s great news it has gone out to 24,000 people, and I’m sure it’ll be very welcome to those who are eligible. It’s been a massive task. It’s great to see the money is going out to people’s bank accounts, and shortly those who don’t pay by Direct Debit will be seeing it and able to get the assistance through the Post Office.” 

He added: “Let’s not forget we are just administering this payment on behalf of Welsh Government, and at a time when things are really tight for residents, I’m sure it will be a welcome sum of money.”
