A SCULPTURE that addresses the problem of plastic in our seas and oceans will be launched in Penmaenmawr this Saturday (April 9).
The ‘Shoal’ is a sculpture consisting of six rods that are attached to the wooden sea defence (groyne) at the high tide mark of the Promenade, with each rod holding two fish made from recycled plastic that swivel and moving with the wind.
Swapping water currents for air currents at 4.5m in height and 4m width, the coloured fish move in unison to create a kinetic, dynamic spectacle for the general public to enjoy as they amble along the historic Promenade.
The piece was commissioned by Penmaenmawr Town Council and Plastic Free Penmaenmawr, a community network that aims to keep the beach and waters of the town single-use plastic-free.
The sculpture was created by Mike Badger, an artist and musician living in Conwy who works particularly with recycled materials, raising awareness of resourcefulness and of environmental issues.
Mr Badger, whose work is exhibited in The Museum of Liverpool Life, commented on his latest creation: “It was a pleasure to win this commission.
“'Shoal' directly addresses the problem of plastic in our seas, but in a fun and dynamic way.
“People can enjoy the sculpture but also think about solving this serious problem."
For those interested in attending the launch, it will take place at 2pm on Saturday, 9 April.
