AN EX-MARINE Engineering student recently returned to Coleg Llandrillo’s Rhos-on-Sea campus to give a presentation concerning his Navigation Officer traineeship.
During shore-leave 20-year-old Jack Penman, from Deganwy, spoke about his experiences in his new role, as well as the vast array of job opportunities available within the sector, in a presentation delivered to both current and potential students.
Since completing the Marine Engineering Level 3 course at the college in 2020, Mr Penman has progressed to a cadetship at Fleetwood Nautical Academy with Union Maritime.
After detailing the range of career choices available within the industry, Jack fielded questions on a variety of topics, including his daily duties, progression openings and potential earnings.
The cadet said: “I was flattered to be invited back to the college to talk about my new career.
“It felt good to be able to encourage people to consider a maritime career by taking up a sponsored trainee officer post, like myself and several of my ex-classmates have done.
“The company I work for supplies gas, fuel and other raw materials, and it is rewarding to realise that I will be part of a team responsible for keeping these important supply chains open for years to come.”
Andy White, lecturer in charge of Marine Engineering, said: “The range of careers in the industry is vast and there will always be a demand for well-trained engineering or Deck Officer cadet, as well as those working with turbine transfer vessels or within the vibrant leisure and superyacht sectors.”
The pair will be appearing at a Ready For Work careers event at the Eirianfa Community Centre in Denbigh on April 4 to give a talk on the rewarding career opportunities that are available within the industry.
