ABERCONWY MP Robin Millar has welcomed yesterday (March 14)’s announcement that 36 public buildings throughout Aberconwy have been connected to lightning-fast full fibre broadband.

This is part of a UK Government drive to level up public services and speed up rollout.

More than 600 hospitals, police stations, libraries and other public buildings in Wales have been connected to the broadband.

It marks the completion of the largest public sector broadband project in Wales delivered by the UK government as part of it is levelling up strategy across the whole of the UK - making a tangible difference to the lives of families, people and communities across Wales.

Anger at Openreach poles 'clouding the open skies' of Llandudno

The 36 buildings connected throughout Aberconwy comprise of five sites in Conwy, three in Llanfairfechan, one in Penmaenmawr, five in Betws y Coed, 14 in Llandudno, six in Llanrwst and two in Trefriw.

Mr Millar said: “A fast and reliable broadband connection is now a vital utility.

“Without it, residents struggle to work from home, schoolchildren and students will struggle to study at home and businesses struggle to compete.

“Companies will also think twice about investing in Aberconwy if adequate digital infrastructure is not in place.

“There are still too many areas across Aberconwy that have unacceptably slow internet speeds and I am determined that all residents and businesses will be able to access a fast and stable internet connection.

“I lobbied the UK Government extensively for this investment into our local digital infrastructure and I am delighted that these buildings have now been connected.

“The connections will also incentivise commercial broadband providers to deliver upgrades to surrounding homes and businesses in Aberconwy by allowing them to extend the government-funded gigabit network.

“This is significantly cheaper and quicker than having to build it from scratch.

“Of course, there is still much to be done.

“The UK Government’s £5billion Project Gigabit will bring faster broadband to tens and thousands of homes and businesses throughout Wales and the UK and I will continue to be relentless in working with the Government and broadband providers to ensure that as many homes and businesses as possible, in even the hardest to reach communities, receive the fast and reliable connections that they need and deserve.”
