A MAN who carried out a sustained attack of punching and kicking in the early hours of 2022 in Llandudno has been jailed for 12 months at Mold Crown Court.
Jake Massey, aged 28, of Victoria Street in Llandudno, pleaded guilty to three offences – causing actual bodily harm (ABH), possession of a bladed article and possession of cannabis.
The court heard that Massey, who was drunk and under the influence of drugs, had been in Llandudno for fireworks on New Years Eve and when riding home, he encountered his victim on the North Parade.
The pair exchanged words before his victim turned away, only for Massey to push him against a bench and proceeding to punch him 10 times, and knee him three times, to the face.
Massey's brutal attack, caught on CCTV, was shown to court, with his victim trying to defend himself from more attacks, before members of the public intervened.
The court was told Massey was reported to have told an Italian man trying to intervene that his victim's ‘mouth was too big and in the UK, if someone mouths off you have to kick their head in’.
Massey proceeded to kick his victim in the face before police arrived to arrest him, where he was found with a knife in his pocket, which he did not use in the attack.
Prosecutors told the court that the victim was left with swelling across his face and cuts to his nose and mouth, but did not want to provide an impact statement.
Judge Timothy Petts acknowledged Massey's early guilty plea and his remorse but said the sustained nature of his attack, added to breaching a community order for domestic abuse, meant a prison sentence was inevitable.
He added: "It was disgusting behaviour.
"You used your fists and knee to attack him and he tried to protect himself. You are lucky that he was not more seriously injured.
"To make matters worse you had a large knife, albeit not used.
"There is some remorse though it does seem to be more self-pity than genuine remorse.
"I am pleased to hear that your enforced abstinence from alcohol and drugs is helping.
"You are at a high risk of reoffending and a medium risk of harm to the public."
Judge Petts sentenced Massey to 18 months, reduced to 12 for the bladed article, nine months reduced to three for ABH and no separate penalty for the drugs, all concurrently.
He will serve half on licence.
