A WALKING football team based in Penrhyn Bay has received a defibrillator donated to them by a Llandudno community group.
Penrhyn Bay Strollers, which has been playing five- to seven-a-side matches for several years, was given the defibrillator earlier this month by Lions Club of Llandudno.
It was presented to Michael McMillan, secretary of Penrhyn Bay Strollers, and Martin Pendleton, by Lions Club president Norman Mylchreest.
Michael, 73, said: “The Strollers would like to thank the Lions for their support and sponsorship.”
The Strollers, a team made of players aged 60 or older, recently qualified for the All-Wales over-60s play-off finals in February 2022.
The team, which includes 88-year-old Alan Camsell, a former hairdressing teacher at Llandrillo College, is a member of the Wales Walking Football Federation (WWFF) and is involved in the men’s over-60s North Wales league.
Statistics have shown that, if a defibrillator is used within the first minute of a victim collapsing, the survival rate can be as high as 90 per cent.
This was one of a number of acts of kindness carried out by the Lions Club recently, having also led a Christmas collection outside Llandudno’s ASDA supermarket, and donated a £500 cheque to the Llandudno Amateur Boxing Association to help with running costs.
The group will also host its annual Boxing Day ‘sea dip’ in association with St George’s Hotel, Llandudno, with proceeds going towards diabetes charities, as well as food banks in the area.
