COLWYN Bay hosted rivals Llandudno at the Four Crosses Arena for what was a highly anticipated match in the JD Cymru North League.

The Seagulls needed a win to boost their hopes of a top four finish while Llandudno looked to extend their six-game winning streak.

Bay started the first half strong, turning up the tempo and putting constant pressure on the visiting Seasiders. A lot of chances went their way, including a free-kick which hit the post, with Llandudno’s defence remaining busy.

The pressure proved too much as a mistake at the back post enabled Kirby to put the home side in the lead at the half-time break.

The weather started to play its part as Sean Eardley’s men came out fighting in the second half with great runs made by Brookwell to open up Bay’s defence.

In the 58th minute a Llandudno player was fouled inside the box and penalty was given with the Seasiders top scorer Cavanagh set to take it. A fantastic save was followed by a poor clearance and marking for Llandudno’s Evans could equalise.

Colwyn Bay didn’t give up but momentum was with the Seasiders, and in the71st minute Llandudno took the lead with a great goal from Williams.

The Seagulls piled on the pressure to try and get an equaliser with the clock ticking, but Llandudno were well organised as Ashton showed experience and leadership at the back.

Llandudno took the win and now sit in third, one point off leaders Airbus, who have a game in hand, while Bay remain in fifth.

“It was unbelievable victory for us, tough place to come," said Eardley. "Colwyn Bay are a very good side and we needed to show character in the second half to come back."

Bay manger Craig Hogg said: "The game should really have been over as a contest at half time.

"We didn’t take advantage of the numerous good chances we had in that period, which was frustrating, as on another day we could have ended up walking away with three points and four or five more goals to the good.

"Half time came at the right time for our visitors, the let off we gave them in the first half clearly gave them lift and credit to them for capitalising.

"They forced us into an error on the penalty they had and the goal we conceded form their corner was poor from us.

"It’s a disappointment but we move on."
