A FULL council meeting held a minute’s silence to mark Srebrenica Memorial Week.

Srebrenica Memorial Week commemorates the victims and survivors of the Srebrenica genocide, in which more than 8,000 Bosniak Muslim men and boys died in July 1995.

More than 20,000 people were also expelled from the eastern region of Bosnia, in what is known as ethnic cleansing.

Srebrenica Memorial Day is recognised internationally on July11, during the memorial week from July 4 to 11.

The charity Remembering Srebrenica calls on people in the UK to remember and learn lessons from the genocide, and to be vigilant against hatred and intolerance.

Cllr Abdul Khan, Chair of Conwy County Borough Council, said: “We remember the spirit of the survivors of the 1995 Srebrenica genocide who, despite the horrendous hatred and destruction they were subjected to themselves, have been rebuilding their lives with dignity, humanity and without calling for retribution or promoting division or hatred.

"We support the Remembering Srebrenica charity 2021 theme of ‘Rebuilding Lives’ in the hope that it will bring communities together to remember and learn from the past to help build stronger, safer and more cohesive societies here in Wales.”
