ON THE day that the new statue of Diana was unveiled at Kensington Palace, it was revealed a volunteer had been presented an award set in the memory of the Princess of Wales.

Carwyn Williams, of, Llandudno, a volunteer with Conwy Youth Service, has been awarded the prestigious accolade in recognition of an outstanding contribution to society. He was was recognised via the 2021 Virtual Diana Award Ceremony (Roll of Honour) broadcast on The Diana Award YouTube Channel.

The award is a charity set up set up in memory of Diana and her belief that young people have the power to change the world.

It is given to young people aged nine to 25 years to recognise their social action or humanitarian work.

Since 2015, Carwyn, 24, has been an integral part of the Peer Education Project and the Healthy Image Project that promotes healthy lifestyles and physical activity to young people in Conwy.

Through volunteering, Carwyn has received the St David Award, StreetGames ‘Volunteer of the Year’ Award, and a Conwy Sports Award. He has also been involved in youth interim committee meetings as well as consultation events.

"I feel honoured to have won The Diana Award," he said.

"She was a true inspiration for young people to have a bright future.”

The Diana Award is the most prestigious accolade a young person can receive for their social action or humanitarian work.

Cllr Julie Fallon, Conwy’s Cabinet Member for Education, said: “I’d like to congratulate Carwyn on this well-deserved Award. It’s so pleasing to see young people benefitting from the activities and initiatives run by Conwy Youth Service.

"In addition, this award was received during Youth Work Week in Wales. A week that aims to promote a wider understanding of and support for youth work across Wales.

"We’re particularly proud of volunteers like Carwyn who give back so much to their communities and create the right environment to help young people gain confidence and equip themselves for the future.”
