BEAUMARIS lifeboat has been called out twice to assist yachts needing assistance in the Menai Strait.

The Atlantic 85 inshore lifeboat Annette Mary Liddington was launched in the early hours of Friday morning and sailed to the aid of a 22 feet long yacht which had suffered engine failure near Penmon Point at the entrance to the Menai Strait.

The yacht had left Conwy for Fleetwood when she suffered engine failure and the two crew aboard managed to anchor the vessel near Penmon.

Upon arrival the lifeboat established a tow and the yacht was taken to a mooring near Beaumaris. Once the boat was securely moored the male and female crew of the vessel taken ashore and passed to the care of the Penmon Mobile Coastguard Rescue Team which had also been tasked to the incident.

Later, on Friday afternoon, a 40 ft long yacht issued a distress call after running aground on sand between Friars Bay and Penmon.

The lifeboat was launched and made her way as close as possible to the yacht.

Due to the low tide it was not possible for the lifeboat to get close to the yacht, but the crew aboard the vessel had elected to remain on board until the craft refloated with the arrival of a rising tide this evening.

As the boat had deployed an anchor and did not appear to have been damaged the UK Coastguard instructed the lifeboat to return to station, pending the arrival of the incoming tide.
