A HUGELY popular event that last year attracted 19,000 spectators has been cancelled in response to Covid-19.

Llandudno Town Council has organised the annual fireworks display since its inception back in 1976.

Having worked with various partners and agencies, as well as consulted with health and safety experts, the town council said they have been left with 'no other option' but to cancel the event for 2020.

A spokesperson said: "Regardless of the many challenges faced by the council over the last 44 years, the town has always managed to put on well received displays, enjoyed by both local residents and tourists who have made Llandudno their destination of choice to enjoy what is now regarded by many as being the 'best fireworks display in North Wales'.

"However, the coronavirus pandemic is upon us which, as far as the fireworks display is concerned, has brought with it so many insurmountable logistical and financial problems that the council has taken the reluctant decision to cancel this year’s display.

"We understand this decision will be met with disappointment by the many thousands of people who have enjoyed the display over the years, but having worked closely with various partners and agencies, and consulted with health and safety experts regarding the many stringent and complicated government rules, regulations and guidelines connected with Covid-19, and the huge costs which would have been incurred, the council was left with no other option but to cancel the 2020 display.

"We apologise for the disappointment this decision will cause."

The council said work will begin soon to see if a display in 2021 can be staged.

Fears were raised in 2019 that last year was the final display; this was due to increasing costs and a 'backlash' to the event being hosted in October.

At the time, cllr Carol Marubbi, chair of the Town Council Fireworks Committee, said: "I do hope everyone appreciates the event.

"There is increasing costs. We could do with sponsorship from different businesses.

"I am very passionate about my town. We don't want to stop it, but this is public money. I know the rates are so high for businesses but they need to start helping. If businesses can give a little bit and we have a couple of good sponsors, just someone to help.

"We do get questions - why October? But we have to fit in with tidal times. If we did not have it then, then we would be looking towards the end of November."
