A Llandudno Junction grandfather will run the London Marathon in aid of his grandchildren.

Alan Newell 48, is a full time carer to Brandon McCarthy, aged 10 and Shannon McCarthy, 22, who both have disabilities.

He is aiming to raise £2,000 for Leonard Cheshire Disability who fund disabled people to access activities, innovative equipment and therapies.

Mr Newell said: “Shannon has autism and severe learning difficulties and Brandon has numerous traits, as the specialist puts it ASD-ADHD-anxiety and global development delay.

“Shannon has to have someone with her at all times she finds it hard to understand certain situations and really hates change in her routine.

“Brandon can be quite trying especially if we need to go out shopping or to appointments.

“Too many people around, having to wait too long or loud noise these can have really bad impact on Brandon.”

Mr Newell, who also has another grandchild, Devon, 15, living with him, said the three of them have been the “one consistent thing in his life” since the death of his wife Lynda in December 2015.

“Since losing my wife they have been my one consistent thing, I look at them and think to myself how lucky I am."

Training for the marathon started last May, which has seen the 48-year old run 6.5 miles three or four times a week, run two marathons in Wrexham and Manchester and he’s even got his grandchildren involved in preparations.

Mr Newell said: “Last month I got the grandkids to do a sponsored walk with me. They dressed as superheroes and we started at our local park and then went around the Great Orme.

“I’ve got a bit of a hip twinge but I’m sticking with my training. My friends and family are really quite supportive and are amazed how well I am doing. If people could donate, no matter how small I would be so appreciative.”
