A yacht owner was shocked to find his home badly damaged after a fire in the Conwy Marina.
David Champman, returned from a visit to the doctor to find his home of four years, a 40 foot Bayliner motor yacht called Miss Penny, being investigated by fire crews after a fire at about 8.30am on Monday morning.
Mr Chapman, originally from Bolton, said: “I went to the doctor’s this morning at about 8.20am, and when I returned the fire crews were here.
“I saw the engines pass me on my way to the doctor and didn’t think anything of it. I didn’t realise until I got back and one of the lads from the Marina picked me up and told me that my boat was on fire.
Crews from Llandudno, Colwyn Bay and Rhyl were called to tackle the blaze at the site, just outside the town. The fire was brought under control an hour later at about 9.30am.
An investigation was launched into the cause of the fire, with one crew remaining at the incident three hours later, until about 11.30, to determine the cause.
A spokesperson for North Wales Fire and Rescue said: “When crews arrived on scene, a 40 foot boat was well alight.
“The fire has affected the engine compartment, which necessitated crews to dampen the area.
"The incident caused 30 percent fire damage and 100 percent smoke damage to the boat."
“The Harbour Master was in attendance, and a Fire Investigation Officer was requested. After the investigation, the cause of the fire was determined to be an electrical fault."
Mr Chapman added: “Before I left, I put the kettle on and the electricity tripped a couple of times. I thought I could smell burning plastic, but I just thought it was the heater. I think it must be an electricity fault.
“People have been so supportive, and have brought food and clothing for me, which is why I have liked living here so much.”
