COLWYN Bay ended their terrible run of defeats on Saturday after digging in for a 3-2 FA Cup victory over Warrington Town.
The Seagulls coasted into a 3-0 lead thanks to Danny Lloyd’s opener and a couple of goals from Rob Hopley, but a nervy final 20 minutes, kicked off by a 70th minute penalty, let Town back into the match.
Colwyn Bay’s backline held firm though for their first win in seven games, and Bay boss Jon Newby was looking on the bright side as his squad were handed a tough Third Qualifying Round clash with Blue Square North pace setters Guiseley on October 6.
“A win is a win. We should have been out of sight and five or six goals up, and then once you conceded the penalty you could see how fragile out confidence is,” he said.
“We said after the game that we have to take the positives out of the game. We were excellent for 70 minutes, but then you concede a goal and we look like conceding another, but that’s something that will come once we keep a clean sheet.
“That we’ve got a home game is the positive to take out of the draw. We were hoping for a club that are not at our level, but with Guiseley we know what they’re about and we’ll start making preparations for them.
"It’s also important for the club in terms of prize money, with something like £7,000 for getting into the next round.”
There is another cloud on the horizon for the Bay though after Chester put in a seven-day notice for full-back Luke Denson.
Chester are set to talk to fans favourite Denson tomorrow (Thursday, September 27), having last week approached the Bay’s top scorer Kevin Holsgrove, who has opted to sign for Guiseley.
Newby said he is now looking at reinforcements to bolster his threadbare squad ahead of this weekend’s match with table-toppers Brackley Town.
“It’s a compliment in a way that they want to talk to Luke and Kev, and shows what a good squad we have here,” Newby said.
“It’s nigh-on impossible to get the lads on a contract as they’re all keen to progress. We’ve got a few irons in the fire, not so much in terms of a right-back, but we’re talking to a few managers in the Football League to try and get some loan deals done.
“We’re hoping to have a few new faces in, as we’re very thin on the ground at the moment with injuries and suspensions.
